A Combined Approach to Parental Coping

DAPHNE HOLBROOK

Daphne Holbrook is a senior social worker in Southwark Social Services Department and works in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital, where she is involved in clinical work, teaching and research. She graduated from Durham University and then obtained a Diploma in Mental Health at the London School of Economics. Her social work experience has been in different settings in the field of child psychiatry. In October 1977 she started a research project, sponsored by CCETSW, to investigate self image, identity formation and family ties of long term fostered and adopted children.

Summary

The development of coping strategies by a combination of behaviour modification, casework and milieu therapy is discussed with reference to the case of a nine-year-old boy admitted to a child psychiatric in-patient unit. Admission had been precipitated by his violent and uncontrollable behaviour at home. The planned return of the child to his family is stressed as an important part of the treatment.
