Deprived Adolescents: A Use for Groupwork

GILL GORELL BARNES

Gill Gorell Barnes currently divides her time between lecturing on aspects of social work in varied settings and committee work on the joint DHSS/DES ‘Child Health Services Committee’, due to report later this year. She is a tutorial fellow at the University of Sussex and a group leader on the Family and Marital work course at the Institute of Group Analysis in London

Summary

This article describes a group for deprived adolescent boys referred to a child guidance unit for violent, anti-social and withdrawn behaviour in school. The referred behaviour is related to its aetiology in environmental and fragmented family conditions and the suitability of group work as providing a containing or 'holding' situation is discussed in relation to other forms of treatment available. The behaviour and role of the therapist is considered, as are the limitations of what can be achieved in provision of this kind
