This article considers key developments in social work in the last decade. From the vantage point of Australia, British social work (and the British Journal of Social Work) is seen in a particular perspective. However, some international comparisons are possible. Thus, the article focuses on two apparently contradictory developments: the ‘search for uncertainty’ in post-structural theory and the ‘search for certainty’ in evidence-based practice. It concludes that both, in different ways, describe social work in the early twenty-first century.

Keywords: social work theory, Britain, Australia, diversity, post-structuralism, evidence-based practice
