Community Work: Social Realities and Ethical Dilemmas
Juliet Chectham began her social work career as a Probation Officer in South London where she developed a special interest in working with immigrants. She is now a Lecturer in Applied Social Studies at Oxford University. She is a member of the C.C.E.T.S.W. Study Group on Community Work and the author of Social Work with Immigrants
Michael Hill is a research officer in the Department of Social and Administrative Studies, Oxford University. He has been a civil servant in the National Assistance Board and a lecturer in sociology at the University of Reading. He is the author of The Sociology of Public Administration, Community Action and Race Relations(with Ruth Isscaharoff), and Men Out of Work
Summary
This article reviews the contributions of sociology and political sciences to the understanding of communities and relates these to some of the key problems facing community workers. It suggests that an effective assessment of some of the ethical dilemmas facing community workers must be based upon a cool appraisal of those urban social structures which are commonly and largely misleadingly regarded as communities
