Summary
Criteria are examined for the location of area offices in Social Services Departments, drawing on the monitored experience of dealing with voluntary callers to an area office in the Probation Service. Changes were observed in numbers of voluntary callers and the kinds of problems presented, together with developments in inter-agency relationships. The caller's subjective feelings regarding the accessibility of the agency were found to be important determinants of agency use. Implications are drawn out for planning decisions in local authorities
