The Abuse of Elderly People: Considerations for Practice

BRIDGET PENHALE

Bridget Penhale is team leader of a team of hospital social workers in Norfolk. From January 1990 until April 1992 she was a Lecturer in Social Work (joint appointment with Norfolk County Council) at the University of East Anglia. Formerly a Local Authority Social Worker, including work in a hospital setting, she has specialized in social work with elderly people since 1984.

Correspondence to Ms. B. Penhale, Team Leader, Social Work Department, West Norwich Hospital, Bowthorpe Road, Norwich NR2 2TU.

Summary

Within the last six years, concern about the abuse of elderly people by their informal carers has increased in Britain. However, problems remain in the identification and treatment of both those who are abused and their abusers. The purpose of this paper is to consider some of the barriers to the identification of abuse; to look at the similarities and differences between the abuse of elderly people and other forms of family violence (in particular child abuse) and to discuss the implications of these for social work practice.
