Contract or Con Trick? A Postscript

JOHN CORDEN and MICHAEL PRESTON-SHOOT

Correspondence to John Corden, Unit Organiser, Leeds Family Service Unit, 15, Lavender Walk, Leeds LS9 8TX

Summary

In their second contribution to this debate, Rojek and Collins have clarified their position to some extent. However, their clarifications raise further issues, some of which are crucial to social work. We also argue that, in attempting to answer our earlier criticisms, they have misrepresented the points we were trying to make. In this paper, we consider briefly criticisms of the content and tone of our earlier reply, the integrity or otherwise of those who advocate the use of client/worker (service) contracts, the relationship between taskcentred work and so-called ‘contract work’, empiricism and evaluation, the significance of discourse analysis for social workers, and the related issues of voluntarism versus determinism, and imbalances of power between clients, social workers, and the agencies for which social workers work.
