Summary
Four local authority social services departments were surveyed to determine the number of adopted children who were currently in their care. The biographical characteristics of these children and the reasons for them entering care are reported. The adoptive dimension is discussed as a possibly relevant factor in the assessment and treatment of these children and their families. It is concluded that appropriate practice in this field requires specialist skills and understanding.
