Department of Health and Social Welfare, The Open University Milton Keynes, MK7 6AA
Summary
The paper is based on the findings of a recent research project which studied, in detail, a group of people discharged from long-stay mental handicap hospitals into independent living situations. It was found that respondents coped with community living by engaging competent others, the carers assigned them by the formal system, Most people achieved a stable support network which maintained them. and which they maintained, and which supported them then in ordinary everyday living, and, at times. through losses, seperations or other upheavals. Support networks were found to vary both in overall size, and in their internal construction, and four type were identified. The social worker featured in all networks, althrough the role varied between different types.
