ANNE CELNICK

Summary

Between january 1980 and December 1982, a team of probation officers attempted a new approach to probation practice which has been described in an earlier article. The present article outlines the types of social enquiry reports which resulted from the experiment, and in a quqntitative analysis of the team's reports, compares the relationship between recommendation and outcome in the different types. Indications of the effect on sentincing of recommendations for a strict reporting style of probation order are examined.
