From Paradigm to Practice in a Special Probation Project

ANNE CELNICK

Anne Celnick, formerly a probation officer in South Yorkshire Probation Service, is now its research officer. Her first degree was in anthropology and she is currently reading for a Ph.D. at Sheffield University.

Summary

Between January 1980 and December 1982, a team of probation officers in South Yorkshire attempted a new approach to probation practice. The project arose initially out of the ideas put forward in Bottoms and McWilliams (1979) ‘A Non-Treatment Paradigm for Probation Practice’, but the team members developed a version of the paradigm which in many respects differed markedly from the original. In this paper, their statutory work is described with particular reference to their social enquiry practice and to their attempted separation of the care and control aspects of probation orders.
