The Other Italian Experiment: Neighbourhood Social Work in the Health and Social Services
The author has practised social work in Birmingham and Humberside, has studied social work and social policy at the Universities of Birmingham and York and is currently teaching on the C.Q.S.W. course at Humberside College.
Summary
Following recent legislation, most social workers in Italy are now responsible for giving a service to the population of a given geographical area rather than to any particular category of client. The findings suggest that there is some experimentation with regard to the organisation and composition of neighbourhood teams and that the trend, not without problems, is towards social workers becoming the gatekeepers to financial and other resources in the Social Service Sector for the local population.
