Summary
This study examines whether a mere human contact, which is not accompanied with any definite treatment goal or technique, can bring about a change in the behaviour of abusing mothers. Results indicated that after three months of social contact between the layman, intervening woman and 40 abusive mothers, significant change could be seen in the abusive behaviour. This change did not last when the contact with the mother was terminated. Three elements inherent in the contact were mentioned by the mothers as an explanation; social control, attention, and easing the burden. The paper ends with a discussion of the use of human contact as a method of treatment, its advantages and disadvantages.
