A Task Based Approach to the Assessment of Social Work Students' Practice

JAN GOODALL and MAUREEN LENN

Jan Goodall gained an MA at St Andrews and then trained for social work at the Institute of Medical Social Work in London. She has practice experience in medical and psychiatric social work, and is currently a lecturer in social work at Dundee University.

Maureen Lenn has social work experience in statutory and voluntary agencies. She was a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Plymouth Polytechnic before moving to Dundee University in 1976.

Summary

An assessment framework based on nine course objectives is described. Each course objective has related placement objectives which become increasingly demanding as the course progresses. Students on placement are required to produce written tasks to show how they have applied their understanding of each placement objective in their practical work.

It is suggested that this framework improves the comparability of placements and the availability of evidence for pass/fail decisions. The framework provides a syllabus for learning on each placement.
