Parental Reactions to Stillbirth

JOAN D. COOPER

Joan Cooper was a County Children's Officer for 17 years. She was the Chief Inspector, Children's Department, Home Office, from 1965 to 1971 and then Director of the Social Work Service at the DHSS until her retirement in 1976. After a year spent at the National Institute for Social Work, she produced a report for the National Children's Bureau on Patterns of Family Placement in 1978.

Summary

The reactions of both parents to the experience of a stillbirth in hospital are studied during three social work visits made during a period of six months after discharge from hospital. Social and emotional responses are discussed and also the implications for social work in hospital and the community.
